a dense band of intercellular fibrils with contraction properties found in some sponges. Collagen occurs in two forms, as free fibrils layed down by special cells called collencytes and lophocytes, and as a distinct binding or skeletal substance (see spongin), layed down by spongocytes (or spongoblasts).
