Burton (1963) synonymized most Western European species of Leucosolenia under the present species name; since then, many authors indiscriminately used this name and consequently many records of e.g. L . variabilis and L . complicata remained obscured under L . botryoides . Records under this name from 1963 onwards are unreliable.
